Immigration to Arkansas: Costs and Benefits

Back by popular demand - The Bessie B. Moore Center for Economic Education worked with the Fort Smith Public School District to offer a fifth evening seminar on Immigration to Arkansas: Costs and Benefits. Almost 40 teachers attended the program that included an overview of the topic; lessons to help teachers understand the costs and benefits of immigration; children's books that teach economics combined with Mexican history and culture; and economics curriculum guides. Kathy Lemons, a Fayetteville High School Spanish teacher, helped Dr. Rita Littrell teach this seminar. The incentive package of children's books, curriculum guides, education and dinner made the benefits of spending the evening in a seminar outweigh the costs. Suggestions for improvements on the seminar evaluation included 15 requests for a longer program. The program was funded by an International Education Showcase Grant from the National Council on Economic Education.
